How the Calculations Work
Original Gravity is estimated from your grain bill using the points-per-pound-per-gallon (PPG) method, adjusted for your mash efficiency. Most base malts yield around 36-37 PPG; specialty malts vary widely.
Final Gravity is estimated using your yeast’s expected attenuation percentage. Most ale yeasts attenuate 72-78%; lager yeasts and saisons can go higher.
IBU uses the Tinseth formula, accounting for boil time, alpha acid percentage, and wort gravity.
SRM uses the Morey equation based on Malt Colour Units (MCU) from your grain bill.
Efficiency Guide
- 60–65% — Typical for BIAB (Brew in a Bag) beginners
- 68–73% — Average for most homebrewers with standard equipment
- 74–80% — Good all-grain setup with proper sparging
- 80–85% — Dialled-in system, fly sparging, recirculation
- 85%+ — Commercial-level. You’ve earned your robes.
